Stable bone volume in the aesthetic zone
Geistlich Bio-Oss® is well integrated into the regenerated bone in the anterior region 14 to 80 months after augmentation; there is no indication of material degradation over time. Daniel Buser and his team have been able to demonstrate this by means of human biopsies.
The patients exhibited insufficient bone volume in the aesthetic region at the time of implantation 4 to 8 weeks after tooth extraction. The surgeons covered the exposed implant surfaces with autologous bone chips followed by a layer of Geistlich Bio-Oss® and then placed a Geistlich Bio-Gide® membrane onto the graft material. They were able to obtain 12 biopsies from 10 patients at various stages following augmentation and performed histological and histomorphometrical analyses.
In prior studies, the research group had demonstrated the long-term stability of augmented bone volume, both clinically and using 3D radiology. Based on their new analyses, the authors assume that long-term volume stability is due to the slow resorption of Geistlich Bio-Oss®.
