Geistlich Surgery as collagen experts at the international congress on cartilage regeneration in Chicago
The congress of the “International Cartilage Repair Society (ICRS)” affords scientists and orthopaedic specialists an important showcase for the latest findings and products in the field of cartilage regeneration. Before the conference, the ICRS organized workshops as part of the continuing professional education; within this framework, they also presented the AMIC® surgical technique, which is based on the use of the Geistlich collagen membrane (Chondro-Gide®). Fifty international specialists participated in this practical course.
The Geistlich symposium offered a platform for the presentation and discussion of the mid and long-term clinical outcomes with the AMIC® technique. Three experts spoke about the use of Chondro-Gide® in three different joints: Professor Roland Jakob, Fribourg, about his long experience with AMIC® in the knee; Professor Markus Walther, Munich, about its use in the ankle; and Professor Andrea Fontana, Como, about a recently published study comparing AMIC® with an older technique (microfracturing) and illustrating the lasting success of AMIC® and Chondro-Gide® in the hip. Two posters and another presentation by Dr. Fontana in the scientific program of the ICRS stressed the arguments for the use of a collagen membrane in cartilage regeneration and relayed his experience using Chondro-Gide® in arthroscopic treatment of chondral defects in the hip.
